Dogs can match some words with objects, study suggests

CNN —Dogs can understand that certain words refer to specific objects, according to a recent study, suggesting that they may understand words in a similar way to humans. As the study’s lead authors, they devised an experiment in which 18 dog owners said words for objects their dogs already knew. They said that the resulting brain activity was the same as those produced by humans in similar experiments. Researchers measured the dogs' brain activity. Previous experiments testing dogs’ understanding of nouns had involved them fetching specific objects when asked, according to a statement released by the Eötvös Loránd University.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A conservative group has told a Georgia judge that it doesn't have evidence to support its claims of illegal ballot stuffing during the the 2020 general election and a runoff two months later. In their written response, attorneys for True the Vote said the group had no names or other documentary evidence to share. The election board subpoenaed True the Vote to provide evidence that would assist it in investigating the group's ballot trafficking allegations. She and another member of the group were briefly jailed in 2022 for contempt for not complying with a court order to provide information in a defamation lawsuit. In addition to names, the judge ordered True the Vote to provide copies of any confidentiality agreements it had with sources.

CNN —The family of an 85-year-old woman who was killed by an alligator while walking her dog has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the real estate company that owns and operates the southeast Florida subdivision where the attack happened. Gloria Serge was walking her dog in February 2023 along a pond in the Spanish Lakes Fairways development in Fort Pierce when a 10-foot alligator attempted to take her dog, CNN previously reported. She was knocked over and the reptile grabbed Serge by the foot and dragged her into the pond, ultimately killing her. The alligator was later caught and euthanized, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Wynne Building Corporation president Joel Wynne responded to the lawsuit saying, “We certainly understand the tragedy and the feelings of Mrs. Serge’s family.

Nearly three years later, the two sides are headed to trial in Georgia over those claims. A ruling against True the Vote could deter similar mass challenges in Georgia and other states, attorneys for plaintiff Fair Fight say. In Georgia, elections officials rejected just a few dozen ballots cast in the 2021 Senate runoff election, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Fair Fight plans to call Engelbrecht. True the Vote had aligned itself with Trump’s reelection campaign and its multistate legal effort to overturn the general election results.

These are some of the activities that can be found at menopause retreats, a wellness trend carving a new niche in the tourism industry. Menopause retreats are tailored to help women navigate the different stages of perimenopause and menopause, and the array of symptoms that come with them — from hot flashes and night sweats to achy joints. Wellness retreats aren't new, of course, but ever since the pandemic, more resorts are promoting menopause-focused vacations — and more women are signing up for them. So instead of just going on a spa retreat, people started going on very specific purpose-driven retreats," Lisa Starr, a spa business consultant at Wynne Business Consulting and Education told CNBC Travel. Do menopause retreats help?

The proposals comes from NIL working group recommendations and don't become final until the council meeting concludes Wednesday. The proposals could be adopted as soon as January at the NCAA convention. Inconsistencies and a lack of transparency has made it almost impossible for the NCAA to enforce rules prohibiting NIL being used as an improper recruiting inducement or pay for play. College sports leaders have been lobbying lawmakers in Washington for federal NIL legislation, but with help uncertain to come, the NCAA is working on creating its own rules. The proposals include expanding suspensions for coaches to include the days between competitions, having schools incur penalties for employing individuals who have received a show-cause order and expanding disassociations with boosters who violate rules.

[1/4] Migrants, without a place to stay upon arrival in the city, seek safe shelter at the District 12 station of the Chicago Police Department in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. May 17, 2023. Some migrants seeking a safe place to sleep have turned to police stations. Earlier this month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, resumed a campaign of busing migrants to Democratic strongholds further north, including Chicago and New York City. The busing aims to alleviate pressure on border cities and call attention to what Abbott says were overly lenient policies by Biden's Democratic administration. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, has called on the Biden administration to provide more funding to cities receiving recently arrived migrants.

WYNNE, Ark.—Mike Ellis saw one tornado in Little Rock from his father’s ninth-floor hospital room and worried about his mom, who uses a walker and was home alone in Wynne, so he rushed to her house Friday in time for a second tornado. He and his 18-year-old son had barely pulled into the driveway when the sirens started to go off. Mr. Ellis helped his mother into a bathroom closet before grabbing a mattress to shield his son and himself as they took cover in a hallway. In a few minutes the tornado was over them.
WYNNE, Ark.—As Danielle Russell drove back into her neighborhood Friday night after a tornado tore through this small city, she said she saw a white shape in the dark and hoped it wasn’t the roof of her house. Moments later she pulled up and saw that powerful winds had peeled off much of a metal layer of her roof, which now hung down, covering the house’s front. The damage forced Ms. Russell, 38 years old, to spend Friday night with her two children in their car, worried that the house wasn’t safe.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas, April 1 (Reuters) - Arkansas first responders on Saturday will sift through debris for more possible victims after a fierce tornado sliced through the Little Rock area and northeastern part of the state, killing at least two people and injuring dozens of others. Two fatalities in Arkansas were reported in Wynne, about 100 miles (160 km) east of Little Rock, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Friday night. One person was killed and more than 50 people hospitalized in North Little Rock, Pulaski County spokeswoman Madeline Roberts told the Washington Post. Although more than 30 people were taken to hospital in the Little Rock area, none had died as of Friday night, said Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr., who added that the count remained imprecise. REUTERS/Radu Sigheti/File PhotoMarch 29 (Reuters) - A study of centuries-old DNA has deciphered the complex ancestry of coastal East Africa's Swahili people, revealing how a cosmopolitan and prosperous medieval civilization arose thanks in large part to women from Africa and men arriving from Persia. After around 1500 AD, the bulk of the Asian genetic contribution shifted to Arabian sources, the study showed. "However, in this case, because Bantu populations in East Africa often have more matrilineal tendencies, African women likely had more autonomy in choosing their partners for building a family. It may be, the researchers said, that the African women and their communities chose to form families with Persian princes or traders, reinforcing trade networks of African and Persian merchants. The evidence of Indian ancestry adds a surprising new layer to the history of the East African coast, Brielle added.
That's the biggest lesson Wynne Nowland, CEO of insurance brokerage Bradley & Parker, learned going through her gender transition in mid-2017. Nowland sent an email to her 70-person staff telling them that she had made the decision to transition her gender. "I did not fully come out until I came out at work," Nowland says. And I've heard from many of the team members that they think I'm a more effective leader after my transition. I tried to do the right thing for my clients, for our insurance company partners and for our team members.
